Since 2016 our editorial team has sent unannounced field testers to 312 jungle outfitters across 23 countries. The 44 operators that survived our 47-point protocol are listed below — the other 268 are kept on file so you don't have to learn the hard way.
A Certified Field-Ready badge is not a sponsorship, a directory listing, or a paid placement. It is the result of a working field biologist or licensed expedition guide spending between six and eleven nights in the operator's camp, scoring five dimensions against a 47-point rubric. The five axes below are the ones we publish. The other 42 sit inside the editorial scoring sheet.
Bilingual certification, species-ID fluency across at least three taxonomic groups, and a verifiable employment record with the same outfitter for two or more seasons. We weight tenured local guides heavily.
No reportable incident filed with the relevant national park authority in the previous 36 months. Evacuation plans must be rehearsed on-site, not described on a website. We audit incident logs.
At least 70% of the working guides, porters, cooks, and boat pilots must be residents of the same watershed the expedition operates in. We verify payroll, not brochures.
Per-guest diesel, kerosene, bushflight, and food-miles disclosed in writing and re-audited annually. We do not require neutrality; we require honesty and a year-over-year reduction.
A re-test pass rate above 85% across our 47-point rubric on the most recent audit. Operators we have tested three or more times must show no regression in the five published axes.
Last cycle audited 47 of the 44 currently certified operators across 11 countries. Three certifications lapsed during re-test and are listed under "Under Review" until 2025-Q1.

We say no to 86% of the operators we visit. We say it in writing, on the record, and we say it again at every re-test. The badge is what survives that process — nothing else.
